Captain Jackie Tollbrook's background and information

Biography

Family & Early Life

The Tollbrook family has been a small merchant family for well over a century, operating out of Eastbourne and Hastings since the late 16th century, trading with various ports along the English channel and nearby areas - the Northern coast of France, the Netherlands (Spanish and otherwise), and all up and down the south and southeast coasts of England. In 1685, Richard Tollbrook, who had recently taken over operation of the business, assisted in carrying French huguenot refugees to England after the Edict of Fontainebleau banned protestantism in France, and during this he met, and fell in love with, one of the refugees, a woman named Elise Lefevre. The two married in 1687.

Jacqueline, born in 1693, was the couple's second child, though the first - a son named Thomas - died before his second birthday of a lung infection. With two more children after Jackie, the family was doing quite well until 1706, when circumstances in Eastbourne and elsewhere started causing significant financial strain on their shipping business. After much consideration of the situation, Richard made the arrangements for the family to relocate to the colonies in the New World.

The New World

Arriving in the Maryland Colony in 1708, Richard Tollbrook and family settled in the recently incorporated capital of Annapolis, bringing their two small trading vessels and taking on much of the regional trading business, making frequent runs between Annapolis, St. Mary's town, and the other British settlements in Virginia and areas further north. Having made the crossing crewed half by colonists, Richard quickly set about recruiting a full crew, and soon met a promising seaman by the name of Alex Thomson. With Alex serving as first mate on Richard's ship, arrangements were made for Daniel to take command of the family's other ship when he came of age. In 1712, Jackie was engaged to marry Alex, with the wedding in 1714, and their first child, a son they named Samuel, born in 1717.

Everything was well, but in 1722, a wealthy colonial nobleman contracted Richard, now well into his fifties, to take a valuable cargo - not to one of his usual destinations, but south, to the Caribbean. The offered pay was so great that Richard could hardly refuse, and he left Daniel to handle the family's regular business in the colonies and took his ship on a trading run to Port Royal. Unfortunately, his inexperience with the southern waters told, and he was captured by pirates off the southeast coast of Florida, in the bahamas. Ship and crew have not yet been seen, though the cargo has surfaced in the markets of Tortuga and Marsh Harbor. Jackie, her husband and father gone, took command of the ship finishing construction in the local shipyards, intended for Alex's use, and sailed south, intent on finding her husband and father, or at least have her revenge against the pirates who had taken them from her. Daniel penned a brief letter to Rebecca, who had returned to England in 1719 to join the Royal Navy, and quickly followed, knowing that Jackie's anger would get her in trouble without help.
