Captain Mary Delany's background and information

(although inspired by a historial personage, this is a work of complete fiction)

Biography

Delany Coat of Arms

Mary Delany was born to Colonel Bernard Granville and Mary Granville (nee Westcombe) at Coultson in Wilshire, and was also niece to the George Granville, 1st Lord Lansdowne. She also has a brother, Bernard, and a sister, Anne.

When Mary was young her parents moved the family to London where she attended school. She came into close contact with the Court when she was sent to live with her aunt, Lady Stanley, who was without child, with the intention being that she would eventually become a Maid of Honour to Queen Anne. While in the Stanley household, Mary learned English, French, music, dance, and those avocations thought befitting a future Lady in Waiting. These hopes were dashed with Queen Anne's death in 1714.

During the tumult that followed as a Hanover took the English throne, her family moved to a manor in the country which was quite isolated from society. And the family's fortunes became even more beholden to the pleasure of Baron Lansdowne. At the Baron's urging, the seventeen year old married Alexander Pendarves, a man 43 years her senior. After several years of unhappy marriage, Mr. Pendarves died suddenly, perhaps from complications from gout brought on by excessive drink, and neglected to settle the bulk of his estate upon his young wife.

To the dismay of her family, Mrs. Pendarves enjoyed the freedoms granted a widow and spent her time as she wished, often visiting family and friends. During one of these visits she met Dr. Patrick Delany, an Irish clergyman and Dean of Down and eventually the two were married in May of 1717 and the couple moved to Dr. Delany's home, Delville, in Dublin, Ireland. The marriage was a singulaly happy one though short lived when Dr. Delany passed away late in 1720.

Left to her own devices, yet again, Mrs. Delany decided to follow in the footsteps of her famous forefathers and take to the sea. Among them Sir Roger Greynville, Commander of HMS The Mary Rose and his son Sir Richard Granville, Vice Adrmiral of the HMS Revenge, hero of the Battle of Flores.
