Captain Gabriel Laurence's background and information

A Short Biography

(The information contained here forth is of a fictional nature. Some places and names may be real, but the majority are not. The story is purely designed for entertainment and role-play value, and has little to no historic accuracy)

'VERSION ONE: This is a rough version, and a more refined one will come in the future.'

Early Life

Born on the 7th of January, 1696, Gabriel was the fourth son of Baron Laurence. Gabriel always showed a strong since of right and wrong, even as a child, and could in fact most days be found at the center of the petty disputes that children so often become a part of.

By the age of Six years of age Gabriel had learned his letters and thought he was ready to set out on his own to make his own name. It was the very same night that he had thought to leave that tragedy struck in his household. In the year of our lord 1702, on the 21st of February, Lady Laurence died of an apoplexy, the cause of which was never found. This had struck Gabriel particularly hard, having been close to his mother, and being present when the affliction killed her.

Pre-Naval Years

The death of his mother at such a young age had a profound effect on Gabriel, and in the passing months could do little but wish to be free from the places which reminded him of her.

By the time of his 9th Birthday in 1705, Gabriel has decided he would like to see the world. With the new peice of insight, and in a way only the very young can, he began to feverishly ask questions of any sailor, captian, trader, or really anyone else who had been about.

It was with one of these individuals that Gabriel became fascinated with ships. Having been to the London docks once before and witnessing the launce of one of his Majesties newest warships, he had already seen what he was hearing about, and instantly fell in love.

In the short years after Gabriel read everything he possibly could pertaining to ships and warfare, not understanding the half of it. But that did not persuade him from his goal.

Even though his father did not agree with his choice of occupation, much rather having him do something more "proper", Gabriel enlisted into the at twelve years of age, in 1708.

The Navy

Continental Europe

By 1709 Young Gabriel, barely 13 years old, saw his first action. It was only a small fleeting battle, a simple skirmish with a French Privateer, but that was enough. Gabriel took part in the boarding action that day, and with a few of his other mates from the gunroom had managed to capture the French captain. Gabriel had earned himself a place as Midshipmen.

Several years had passed since that first taste of blood, and the now Third Lieutenant Laurence was one of the most promising young officers of the year 1716. It was by luck that three months later, around mid June that year that the small frigate found itself doing a cruise around the north of Africa. Shortly later, in August of that year, a band of Corsairs attacked and boarded the vessel Laurence was a part of.

After a fierce melee the boarders were repelled, but the damage had already been done. The ship was nearly lost, truly with the astounding amount of damage it was a god send she was still afloat. Having also lost her Captain and second Lieutenant, Laurence found himself in the spot of an acting Second Lieutenant while they limped home, beaten and bloodied. In a Bizarre twist of fate, Second Lieutenant Laurence found himself once again promoted, for heroism under fire, to the position of Lieutenant, the prime roll on a ship.

After his new found promotion, Laurence found himself posted on HMS Montague, under Captain Thomas Beverley. It was not until 1718, at the battle of Cape Passaro against the Spanish that Laurence next saw action.

HMS Montague had managed, by deft sailing and brute force, had managed to board and take the Volante relatively intact. Laurence found himself leading the captured ship into port as part of the prize crew, and his streak of ungodly luck still withstanding, found himself freshly promoted to Captain and given the Volante newly named HMS Violence.

It was there it could be said that the fresh new Captain Laurence's luck ended. Three years later, Captain Laurence found himself assigned to Patrol duty in the West Indies.

West Indies

By now it is 1722, and I am writing this passage of my own somewhat strange and odd past myself. It is now mid October, 1722, as I have already stated, and I feel due to the nature of the "Burning Sea" as we call it now, that I should personally record my past up until this date.

It started in August of the year last, I had just arrived here in the West Indies after a six month journey across the Atlantic ocean. As you must have gathered, I am a new captain, although not completely unskilled in my trade. What I do lack however, is experience. And that experience cost me my ship and my crew. In mid August of the same year, we were sailing towards a destination known as "Jenny Bay" when we ran afoul of a particularly nasty Typhoon. She had beat my ship and thrown several of the crew overboard, when the storm suddenly broke. We found ourselves in a situation not to our liking. The fore and aft masts were quite gone, not a sign of them, and we hadn't a spare. So when the pirates came, we were wholly unprepared for it.

Shortly after the storm, we ran afoul of a gang of ruffians known as the "Bilge Rats". They managed to take us prisoner, with a fight I might add, and scuttled my precious ship. We were held by them inside their flagship, a despicable floating wreck of trash, held together with cords and spit. I daresay I know not how I survived, only that I did. My crew was gone elsewhere by then, I suspect dead, and I feel I was only being held because my own head may yet count for some sort of ransom.

I lived this way for almost a year when a heroic captain of the British Navy stationed in whatever area we were in, frankly kicked their bastard asses. I was released from my captivity and made welcome aboard his ship, the HMS Delectable as we made port for my original destination, "Jenny Bay".

We were only hours out of port when another group of Bilge Rats attacked us, and in boarding combat killed the good captain who has been my saviour, and most of the crew. I myself escaped only by, let my say only "embarrassing" measures kept me from defending the ship, and mayhap dying myself. With the ships Captain and most her crew gone, I took command of the vessel, and with help from Mr. Holt, we repelled the attack, and into my possession fell a most curious map.

Upon given the scene of the confrontation our heels, we were able to successfully make port at Jenny bay, a year later than originally planned.

Within hours of making port though, the Bilge rats laid siege to the port, but were repelled. Anyone with a ship was enlisted to aid in driving their ships away after the populace had managed to force them out of the port proper, and that was how I found myself once again on the sea and fighting. During the engagement, I was forced to board a Bilge Rat Vessel. During this engagement, I was savagely wounded, losing my left eye and some of the surrounding tissue.

I awoke days later to see the battle was over, and we had won.

So begins the rest of my life, here in the Burning Sea.
