Born in 1698 to Jane Pellew and James Pellew. The father, James Pellew, was a Captain for the East India Company, allowing him to gain a small fortune for his wife, and unborn child. Jane, she was a bakers daughter, and helped in the bakery of which her parents owned, when they died, they left the bakery to their daughter, allowing her to continue her love for baking. Alistair was born in the flat above the bakery in which his parents lived. From a young age of 5, Alistair took to the seas with his father as a deck hand. Very quickly, James, realised Alistair's fondness for the sea and his love to learn all about Captaining a ship. This was all very true of Alistair, he loved the sea, and the craft that appeared to glide over the waves. However, at the age of 11, Jane joined James on his ship, when he set off for Lisbon, leaving Alistair to learn to deal with things at hand, and learn to deal with life. At the age of 12 joined the Royal Navy. At the age of 16, the ships captain deemed Alistair officer-worthy and Alistair received the rank of Midshipman. After three years at sea, Alistair had grown in experience and his new captain, placed him in for his Lieutenants Exam, this pleased Alistair, and immediately started studying. Alistair, failed his exam, and had to wait yet 6 months before he could retake, in which Alistair jumped on the first chance he could. This time however, Alistair succeeded. At the rank of Lieutenant, Alistair was given command of the 12 Gun Unrated Ship ''HMS Pride of the Weald''. Then came his first real command, Captain of the ''HMS Indefatigable'', a 30 Gun Fifth Rate Frigate! However, within 6 months of his command, Alistair was transferred, to the Saint George Squadron of the White, stationed in the West Indies, Alistair was to keep his ship and crew, and to serve under the Saint George Squadron from now on.

Captain Alistair Pellew's background and information

The Pellew Family (IN PROGRESS)

Alistair Pellew Arms 01.jpeg

The Pellew Family can trace it’s heritage as far as 1066, when, having successfully served William I throughout his subjugation of England, Gabriel Dari Pelleau (as the family name was styled then) was awarded the style of Portsman of the Cinque Port of Hastings, Sussex with such a title deeming Gabriel to be a baron and thus, a member of the peerage.

As barons of Hastings, the Pellew’s successfully assisted in the ship-building functions of the port town, allowing the town to develop it’s stake as a key Cinque Port, eventually signifying it as the ‘Head Port’. The Pellew’s key responsibilities as a baron of Hastings revolved around their family’s forestry business. Given the growth of Royal Forests and creation of further forest charters following the Norman invasion, which prohibited many rights afforded to persons operating in such areas, this was a lucrative opportunity for the family when combined with their other ventures.

In 1396, Guy Pelleau inherited the estates of the family. It was not unheard of for Guy to engage in corrupt practices, turning a blind eye to smuggling, furthering his economical position. However, despite a successful appearance, Guy had run the financial position of the Pellew family into great debts, having to resort to extensive borrowing. Their position was such that at the end of 1398, Henry V received word of Guy’s exploits from his fellow Portsmen, and stripped the the Pellew’s of the dignities and styles afforded to them. The majority of the family were subsequently imprisoned in Fleet Prison for debt and later perished from disease and starvation.

It was not until half a century later that Edward Benedict Pellew, nephew to Guy Pelleau, having escaped to Alderney was able to build up the necessary funds to clear the family name of their debts. With the debts cleared, Edward returned to England and settled in Northumberland where the family continued to live without further scandal.
